Sample-sized tapestries
Ultimamente tenho tecido de forma quase compulsiva estas mini-tapeçarias — em casa, no comboio, no parque… Sempre que arranjo um tempo livre, pego na lã e no tear e começo a transformar fios em tecido.
Fazendo tantas, tenho tempo para pensar sobre elas, sobre o que representam e porque é que são, neste momento, a minha forma predileta de expressão.
Lately I've been almost compulsively weaving these mini tapestries — at home, on the train, at the park… Whenever I find some free time, I pick up my tiny loom and some wool, and I start turning threads into fabric.
As I’m making so many, I have time to think about them, what they represent and why they are, at the moment, my favourite form of expression.
Inicialmente, eram apenas amostras de diferentes cores naturais que ia explorando. Serviam como mostruário de tinturaria natural e de estruturas de tecido. Lentamente foram-se transformando em pequenas obras de parede, cada uma contendo em si diferentes técnicas artesanais e tradicionais. Algumas com lã fiada por mim, outras com lã, linho ou algodão tingido por mim, outras com um pouco de cada técnica.
Todas representam a nossa vontade coletiva de transformar lã (ou outra fibra) em fio e fio em tecido. São pequenas amostras de conhecimento e esforço coletivo, e como tal têm força por si só, como testemunho da paixão e fascínio que temos pelos têxteis. Sempre como fragmentos.
Às vezes perguntam-me qual a sua utilidade - não sei responder. Ficam bem na parede, acho eu.
Initially, they were just samples of different naturally dyed yarn, that I wanted to see woven. Slowly, each tiny tapestry turned into wall art, each one containing different traditional techniques. Some are made with wool that I handspun, others with wool, linen or cotton dyed by me with natural ingredients, others with a bit of each technique.
They all represent our collective will to transform wool (or any other fiber) into yarn, and yarn into fabric. They are small samples of knowledge and collective effort, and as such they have strength in themselves, as a testimony to the passion and fascination we have for textiles.
Sometimes I am asked what is their use - I don’t know how to answer.
They look good on the wall, I think.
