A criação artística foi, durante muito tempo, associada a dons e inspirações divinas. A transformação de matérias simbolicamente “mortais” em formas sagradas, transcendentes, com sentimento mágico e espiritual, deu um estatuto quase divino ao escultor que, assim como o criador com a sua criatura, criava a partir do nada, um novo ser, muitas vezes idealizado, aperfeiçoando o que a Natureza tinha como imperfeito. Assim, podemos dizer que o artista tem nas suas mãos o poder de fazer surgir, de revelar aquilo que já se encontra na matéria, de ser o impulsionador da transformação, e assim, fazer nascer uma nova experiência a partir de muitas outras.
A pedra como matéria de criação, concentra em si o equilíbrio entre o instante e o infinito, entre a sua veloz capacidade de mudança e a forma petrificada. A cada vista é consumida por uma energia que a invade e a modifica. Torna-se num corpo amolecido, mas ainda a caminho da sua ascensão. A essência da sua forma original permanece e é passada para as novas formas que dela se apoderam, dando à pedra uma nova vida, uma nova imagem.
Esta escultura desvenda esse momento da criação, tomando a matéria como tema do trabalho. A sua forma compacta e ambígua convida à especulação de novas imagens e figuras, de novos símbolos, de novas criações. Como Pigmalião, fazemo-nos artistas, aguardando ansiosamente o instante da sua transformação em algo real, da sua inexplicável, mas tão desejada, metamorfose.
Artistic creation has, for a long time, been associated with divine gifts and inspirations. The transformation of symbolically “mortal” materials into sacred, transcendent forms, with a magical and spiritual feeling, gave an almost divine status to the sculptor who, like the creator with its creature, created out of nothing, a new being, often idealised, perfecting what Nature considered imperfect. Thus, we can say that the artist has in its hands the power to make things emerge, to reveal what is already in the material, to be the ignitor of transformation, and so, to birth a new feeling from many other experiences.
The stone as a matter of creation, concentrates in itself the balance between the instant and the infinite, between its rapid capacity for change and the petrified form. With each view she is consumed by an energy that invades and modifies her. It becomes a softened body, but still on the way to its ascension. The essence of its original form remains and is passed on to the new forms that take hold of it, giving the stone a new life, a new image.
This sculpture reveals this moment of creation, making the material itself the theme of the work. Its compact and ambiguous form is the invitation for the speculation of new images and figures, new symbols, new creations. Like Pygmalion, we (the viewer) become artists, eagerly awaiting the moment of its transformation into something real, of its inexplicable, but much desired, metamorphosis.
